The fountain at St. Martin's Church takes its name from Henman Seevogel, whose likeness in armor is represented by the fountain figure. Henman Sevogel was a Swiss politician who worked in Basel. He fell in 1444 in the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs.

The figure was created by Hans Tobel around 1546. The term “Sevogelbrunnen” is used incorrectly; the figure does not represent Captain Henman Sevogel.More information here: altbasel.ch/fussnoten/brunnen_sevogelbrunnen.html

Very beautiful and well-kept fountain. The column and armored man were created by Hans Dobel from Strasbourg in 1546/47. The name "Sevogelbrunnen" can be documented from the 19th century. This meant that the warrior was mistakenly considered to be Henman Sevogel, captain of the Baselbieter team, who was killed in the Battle of St. Jakob on August 25, 1444. The name stuck to the fountain.
