Cloister
The picturesque Gothic double cloister (15th century) with the hall between them represents a rarity in architectural history. The ornate vaults of the individual cloister wings, with their keystones featuring coats of arms and foliage, are particularly beautiful. Also noteworthy are the magnificent windows overlooking the cloister garden, which feature a variety of tracery forms. In the Middle Ages, altars stood in the cloister, where services were held and where stops were made during processions of the cathedral chapter. The complex thus served liturgical purposes until the Reformation (1529). The medieval tradition of using the cloister as a burial site continued in Reformed Basel until the 19th century. Basel councilors, scholars, merchants, and their families were buried here. Numerous magnificent epitaphs (gravestones) have been preserved and give the cloister its atmospheric character to this day.
