The construction history of the town hall is only partially understood. It is certain that today's town hall is the third on the new market. The construction of the first town hall dates back to 1292 and is documented by two documents. It can be assumed that the first town hall building burned to the ground during the great city fire in 1305. Structural remains were found during construction work in the basement. All that is known about the second town hall building from 1368 to 1438 is that various changes were made to what is now the ground floor. It is assumed that the construction of the second town hall began after 1305 and was completed around 1360. The oak beam ceiling of the gallery dates from around 1350. Both buildings, the first and second town hall, were built, as was common at the time, with a massive basement, a steep gable roof and half-timbered gables. The roof covering consisted of shingles or slate tiles. Until the 15th century, the market was approx. 2 m lower. The current cellar vaults represented the ground floor. This situation can be seen in the exposed cellar stairs on the west gable. In 1442, according to an entry in the court register, the third town hall was completed. Construction began in 1438. In this context, the area of the lower town was raised to better withstand flooding. The embankment was triggered by the debris from the city fire of 1430. The third building was a complete reconstruction of the town hall. The massive basement of the previous buildings became the basement. The outer walls of the north, east and south sides moved outwards by the depth of the shopping chambers. In 1540 the town hall was damaged by fire. However, nothing is known about the extent of the damage. This fire was the reason for the complete renovation of the west gable in brick construction in the early Renaissance style. The east gable from 1441 was preserved as a half-timbered gable. The town halls of Wittenberg, Colditz and Plauen were also built around this time. In Grimma, the motif of the large gable is still dominant, which was changed during later renovations. ....

Great that this city and thus also the market place, which had to suffer from the floods again and again, could be built up so beautifully again and again. Hopefully the flood defenses will protect the city now
