The original Schemelbert mill was built in 1636. The name refers to the Schemelbert domain opposite, a former water castle. In 1914 the mill was largely destroyed by the Belgian army because the mill and adjacent building stood in the field of fire of Fort Liezele.
The mill was rebuilt in 1922 and from then on was powered by a diesel engine. This watermill is the only one of its kind in Klein-Brabant. Today the mill and associated buildings are a protected monument.
