Next to the palace is the imposing and photogenic Pegasus Fountain. It's particularly popular with fans of the film "The Sound of Music," as the "Do-Re-Mi" song was recorded right here in front of the fountain in 1965.

Pegasus Fountain in the Mirabell Gardens, Salzburg, 1661

The copper Pegasus was originally crafted in 1661 for the horse trough on Kapitelplatz. Around 1700, it was moved to the horse trough on Mirabellplatz. After the city fire of 1818, the sculpture disappeared into storage for decades. In 1913, it was reinstalled in a fountain basin on Mirabellplatz.

In Greek mythology, the winged horse 'Pegasus' helps the heroes Perseus, Bellerophontes and Heracles to fly over the sea and thus made their heroic deeds possible. By placing it as an artistic bronze sculpture in a stately fountain, a symbol was used that is intended to indirectly emphasize the strength and glory of those in power. The bronze sculpture of the winged horse 'Pegasus' was originally part of the "Kapitelschwemme" on the "Kapitelplatz", but was later moved to the "Mirabellplatz". Part of the Mirabell Floodplain and has been known as the 'Pegasus Fountain' since 1913 at its current location in the Mirabell Gardens in the small garden parterre.
