"Let flames shine across all of Germany in honor of Bismarck": This was the call of German students in 1898 after Bismarck's death. Columns and towers crowned with flame bowls were to be erected throughout the country in honor of the deceased. In Bochum, a committee was formed in 1908 to build a Bismarck Tower. From over 650 submitted tower designs, the design by the Breslau architect Albrecht Friebe, a student and collaborator of the renowned Hans Poelzig, was selected. Friebe's design was called "Riese" (Giant). The people of Bochum raised 100,000 marks for the construction.
