The large and small water bodies with hundreds of water birds are a paradise for true nature lovers. De Wijers together account for some 750 ha of water and reed. The water landscape also offers a home to many rare animals and plants, such as the bittern – a mysterious heron – and the small tree frog. Without the ponds, reed fields and heathland in De Wijers, species such as the bittern, wood ape or tree frog might already be extinct in Flanders.
