Why exactly a highlight was created here is not really clear because the place is located on the connecting hiking trail between the Platwijers and Wijvenheide. Here is mainly agricultural area with streams and some beautiful pieces of forest which is also very beautiful. And of course the forests, fields and wetlands you will find here are paradises for birds, in short: the whole area here. This was probably created as part of one of the Wijer walks that pass here and which you can find at wandeleninlimburg.be/nl/routes/3377858 - some pictures of what can be seen at this point and of the walk in the photo section of this highlight. The next ponds are still a bit of a walk from here, just keep going :)

The large and small water bodies with hundreds of water birds are a paradise for true nature lovers. De Wijers together account for some 750 ha of water and reed. The water landscape also offers a home to many rare animals and plants, such as the bittern – a mysterious heron – and the small tree frog. Without the ponds, reed fields and heathland in De Wijers, species such as the bittern, wood ape or tree frog might already be extinct in Flanders.
