The Cistercian monastery, founded in 1199 at the mouth of the Ryck east of what later became the city of Greifswald, was the most important monastery in the region in the Middle Ages and, with the buildings built from the early 13th century to the beginning of the 15th century, had an architectural design that was commensurate with its importance. This Cistercian monastery was founded as a branch of the Esrom monastery, existed until the Reformation in 1533 and subsequently fell into disrepair.
