The Ryck, which connects the two Greifswald harbors, the one in Wieck and the city harbor, was the main lifeblood of the old Hanseatic and maritime trading town until the 19th century. Especially after the transfer of New Western Pomerania to Prussia in 1815, the city of Greifswald invested significantly in deepening the fairway, which was constantly threatened by siltation, and improving the port infrastructure.
In the 1850s and 1860s, the Wiecker and Greifswald harbors were expanded. The Ryc bank was reregulated as early as 1828 to 1837. On the south side, a towpath was created for ships to tow, which still serves as a flood dike to this day.
The towing of commercial shipping vehicles on the Ryck is a thing of the past; it is unknown when the last ship was towed. After several decades, a ship was towed on the Ryck again for the first time on April 18, 2015 with the “White Dune”, which left the Greifswald Museum Harbor, its winter berth, at the beginning of the sailing season.
