During the Roman era, the course of the Hill River—from its lower reaches at the Weser River to its source—formed part of the border between the administrative districts of Cologne (Civitas Coloniensis) and Tongeren (Civitas Tungriensis).

From 1816 onward, a state border also ran across the High Fens plateau, initially between the Netherlands and Prussia.

Boundary stone number 157 marks the end of the line of Belgian-Prussian boundary stones; from this point onward, the Hill was wide enough that its natural course could clearly serve as the border.

Unfortunately, the boundary stone number is partially covered by the metal reinforcements.

From 1830, this section formed the dividing line between Belgium and Prussia, and from 1870 between Belgium and the German Empire. The border ran south from Eupen, following the course of the Hill River to its source, then continuing to Baraque Michel and subsequently along a "New Vequée" to the vicinity of Hockai.
