Alongside the Lühike Jalg (Short Cathedral Hill), the Pikk Jalg used to be the only road connecting the Lower Town and the Upper Town. While the Short Cathedral Hill was reserved for foot soldiers, the Pikk Jalg could also be used by carts. However, this was not without its problems. The alley is so narrow that traffic had to be regulated by guards in the 18th century. Anyone who wanted to drive through the Pikk Jalg had to wait for the signal that the way was clear for them.
