This stone statue stands in tribute to Alfonso II of Asturias, also known as el Casto, or the chaste. It’s not clear how he got the epithet, but it might have something to do with his discovery of the supposed tomb of St. James the Great in Compostela. His reign spanned 51 years, but marked with near continuous conflict with the occupying moors The monument depicts the king wearing Visigothic armour, with one hand on his chest, while looking up towards the Cathedral of Oviedo with a calm expression in the manner of a saint.
