The small baroque church from 1749 in Zell is dedicated to our local saint, St. Philip the Hermit, who founded his “Celle” in the 8th century AD near the Wotansfelsen.

Since 1780, the Philip pilgrimage has taken place on the Sunday after May 3rd, the memorial day of Saint Philip. Various bishops from Speyer and Mainz and also the nuncio, the Pope's representative in Germany, have been our guests at the pilgrimage mass with Eucharistic procession.

Since 2006, the pilgrimage has been extended to a whole week, with pilgrimage days for the diocese of Mainz, the deanery, the women of the KfD, senior citizens and also for motorcyclists. Above all, the motorcycle pilgrimage with sometimes more than 400 motorcycles, which is organized together with the Ottersheim motorcycle club Brothers in Arms, has developed into a major crowd puller.

Zell owes its name to Philip of Zell, who was later canonized. At the beginning of the 8th century, he built a monastery cell at a nearby Wotan cult site. His work and his cellula were first mentioned in documents in 850. Saint Philip was invoked above all in cases of childlessness. Thus, in the 15th century, Zell developed into an important place of pilgrimage.

The Zellertal got its name from Zell. There are two churches there, both dedicated to St. Philip of Zell. The Anglo-Saxon priest had settled in 800 on the way back from Rome in Zellertal. In the Middle Ages, Zell was a major place of pilgrimage
