At the initiative of King Willem 1, the construction of this canal was started in 1820, which was to form a connection between Holland and the industrial area of Liège. Belgium was then part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Because Den Bosch was a fortress, they wanted to put the canal around the city. At the insistence of the city council, however, it was decided to let the canal run through the fortress. The economy won out over defense.
