The 'Bad Step' on Crinkle Crags is a small scramble alongside two large chockstones that block a gully leading to the summit of Long Top. It is not a difficult scramble but is very steep (near vertical) and only a couple of metres of any real exposure. An alternative path exists around either side (left being the safer) so there is no need to do the scramble to summit the mountain from this direction.

It may look intimidating from a distance, but it’s just the first (ascending) or final (descending) part that you need to be confident with. Three points of contact at all times and be confident in what you do. Plenty of grips spots for your hands and feet.

If you fancy an adventure on your way to Crinkle Craggs the you can go via the Bad Step or you can take the path to the left (if you’re on the ascent to Bowfell) and avoid it totally. It’s also a great place to stop and watch others attempt it
