One of Scafell Pike’s subsidiary summits, hikes up Broad Crag offer an exhilarating walk whether you’re heading to the Pike itself or not. It’s one of the highest summits in England, as is its neighbour, Ill Crag, although their prominence only lies around 160 feet (50 m).

An ascent with the possibility of seriously phenomenal views on clear days, you can choose to hike up Broad Crag by itself or easily expand your route. Scafell Pike, Ill Crag, Great End and even across Esk Pike to Bow Fell are all possible extensions depending on your ambitions. In good weather, this crag makes for a wonderful day out for the whole family too.

Walking under the watchful gaze of Scafell Pike

Broad Crag sits on a well-trodden route to Scafell Pike but reaching its summit requires an extra effort due to its incredibly rocky nature. You’ll find the summit at 3,064 feet (934 m) and here you can take a rest to admire the astounding views.

Dominating your south westerly view, of course, is the mighty citadel of Scafell Pike, England’s highest peak. Further afield, look all around to spy Bow Fell, Great Gable and even Skiddaw to name a few. In the right weather, the views from Broad Crag truly show the majesty of the Lake District.

While you can ascend throughout the year in the right conditions, only experienced and equipped winter mountaineers should attempt the crag in snow and ice. The hike is a strenuous one and you should always be prepared for changeable conditions.

Parking can be found in almost every direction with numerous hiking trails. Borrowdale, Wasdale and Langdale have campsites and pubs with hotels scattered all over the region.

Tips

  • Standing at 3,064 feet (934 meters), Broad Crag is the fourth highest peak in the Scafell range, following Scafell Pike, Scafell and Ill Crag. While thousands of hikers pass within a few feet of the summit every year, most do not climb its rocky slopes. However, on a sunny day, it is well worth a scramble to the top.

  • One of many peaks near Sca Fell, if you plan the route right you can conquer several at once, including Broad Crag, Lingmell etc. No matter the day the views from almost any peak in the Lakes are stunning.

  • One of about nine Nuttalls in the central Scafell group. Broad Crag's summit is not often visited though as it consists of a very rocky bouldery top which is just off the footpath enough to put people off the awkward journey to its non descriptive top. Fine views from there though.
