The Braake was created by the break of the Elbe dike at the Christmas flood in 1717. Braake means Low German break or broken. Today, it serves as a receiving water for the collection and discharge of surface water and is dewatered by a pumping station into the Elbe. The Braake takes in Brunsbütteler urban area further drainage systems (Sprante, Helser - Kattrepeler Fleet) and reaches here a width of about 40 m. It is used by the local fishing club and has recently been developed for recreational use: paddleboat rental, operation of ship models, public park.

In the Christmas storm of 1717, which caused devastating damage to the entire North Sea coast, broke the Elbe dike at Brunsbüttel. The result was an approximately 100-meter-wide breakthrough, through which water could penetrate and permanently wash over large areas of the hinterland.

The isolation of this Low German first "Brak" ("break"), later called "Braake" called open site proved because of the flow conditions of the Elbe and because of the lack of foreshore as a difficult dike construction project. In addition there were regular heavy storms and floods, which destroyed the work, which had been started over and over again by the sovereign in Süderdithmarschen, the Danish King Friedrich IV (1671-1730) with great energy and the mass deployment of soldiers.

1721, the plan of the Elbe Abandonment was abandoned. Instead, a bypass was built, which like a large inland sweeping loop from the church Brunsbüttel (now Brunsbüttel-Ort) to Büttel auspicious water-like Braake and thus let the area of the later Brunsbüttelkooges to the Elbe and Braake dominated dyke foreland.

It was not until 1761/62 that the embankment of this area succeeded in becoming the Brunsbüttel-Eddelaker-Koog. The so far dreaded Braake became the main drainage channel of the new Koog and got a Siel to the Elbe, which became the starting point for the development of a small port ("Neuenkoogshafen", today "Old Port").
