The red and white striped tower stands on the lock island. The Brunsbüttel leading light line shows ships sailing upstream the way towards Brunsbüttel.
From pier 1 you have a good view of the tower.

The Kiel Canal was officially opened on June 21, 1895 as the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal. Several lighthouses mark the outskirts of the lock approaches at both ends. They stand on four pier heads on the Elbe. The lights on Mole 1 and Mole 2 are still preserved and went into operation in 1895.

In 1914 new locks and also new pier lighthouses, pier 3 and pier 4, were built.

The entrance to the NOK is exposed to a high risk of accidents and here in Brunsbüttel repair costs of up to one million are incurred every year.

Mole 1, which belongs to the old lock, was completely renovated in the 1990s. The pier head threatened to collapse. The tower was removed to allow the pier to be rebuilt.

The renovated tower now stands on a base at a distance of 50 cm from the surrounding solid concrete ring of the pier head. In the event of recent accidents, the tower is only endangered if the separately founded concrete ring is shifted by more than one meter.
