At the Kornmarkt stood the Waaghaus with the public scales for the grain traded on the square, the corresponding building was first documented in 1343 as "fronwage zu Bozen" and in 1396 as "an der Wag". According to the Bozner city law of 1437, grain in Bozen could only be sold at Kornplatz; these regulations also applied to cheese, chestnuts and nuts. Bozen's market regulations, written around 1450, also stipulated that fodder, corn and grain could only be weighed and sold on the "right grain market square".

The picturesque Kornplatz, once the seat of the Kornmarkt, is now surrounded by beautiful shops and restaurants. This is the first urban area of Bolzano with the palace of the Prince-Bishops of Trento, the city's founders; the palace was probably destroyed by Meinhard II of Tyrol during one of his attacks (1277) to conquer the city.
