Tips

  • The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, also known as the St. Mary's Parish Church, Cathedral Parish Church, Bolzano Cathedral, or Provost Church of the Assumption of Mary, is the parish church of the South Tyrolean capital of Bolzano and the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone. While the bishop has resided in Bolzano since 1964, his cathedra and the cathedral chapter remained in Brixen; the Assumption of Mary thus functions as a co-cathedral alongside the Brixen Cathedral. According to the so-called "Bolzano Chronicle," the first parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Bolzano was consecrated in 1180 and was built in the Romanesque style. Legend has it that a Bolzano carter discovered a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary on this site. This Our Lady of the Moss is said to have been located in the marshland of the Eisack River, whose riverbed was then much closer to the present-day cathedral. The statue, which dates back to the 12th century, is now located in the east-facing Baroque Chapel of Grace behind the church's high altar. The medieval church was built on the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 5th or 6th century.A detour to the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary is a wonderful addition to a cycling tour. Thanks to the well-developed network of cycle paths, you can easily explore Bolzano by bike and visit cultural highlights such as the cathedral.Further information about the cathedral can be found at:

  • Cathedral Maria Himmelfahrt, Bolzano
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the symbol of Bolzano and at the same time a gem of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, a sign of the ongoing fruitful encounter between southern and northern influences in Bolzano, which is second to none. We are talking about the Dom Maria Himmelfahrt, the showpiece of the city's living room, the Waltherplatz.
The first floor plan goes back to early Christian times, in the 11th century a rectangular Romanesque style church was built and consecrated in 1180 in the name of the Assumption of Mary.
In the 14th century, the Augsburg master builder brothers Schiche gave the basilica a Gothic dress made of reddish (Grödner) and yellow (Unterlandler) sandstone. The gargoyles and artistically chiseled balustrades are reminiscent of Notre Dame in Paris and are masterpieces of high Gothic architecture.
