The Erlengrund was created as a green connection between the Nenndorf spa park and the Deister. The Erlengrund is part of the Kurpark cultural monument, as well as the Süddeister landscape protection area and the Weserbergland nature park.

Among the birds observed during surveys in 2020 are the three Red List species starling, wood warbler and goldfinch. No amphibian occurrences were observed. Around 10 species of bats use the Erlengrund as a transit corridor and the area around the ponds to forage.

The Erlengrund spring, located west of the ponds, is one of the nine springs used in the spa operations of the Nenndorf state spa. It delivers 10.6° warm calcium-magnesium-sulfate-bicarbonate water. The spring water is collected in the listed spring house in the west of the Erlengrundteiche, piped into the spa facilities and used there for baths.
