The Appenmühle is mentioned in a document as early as 1369. In the late middle and the end of the Middle Ages, the localities of Bulach, Beiertheim, Daxlanden, Mühlburg and Knielingen were forced to grind their grain in the Appenmühle. After its destruction in World War II, it was rebuilt in 1950.

The run-of-river power plant in Appenmühle an der Alb in Daxlanden, which was put back into operation in the spring of 2000, has an electrical output of around 40 kilowatts. Stadtwerke Karlsruhe generates around 200,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year there, which is enough to supply 80 Karlsruhe households.

The Appenmühle is not located on the actual river bed. At the Thomas weir, part of the water is led into a canal that leads to the Appenmühle and flows back into the river a few meters downstream. At a barrage, the flowing water drives a so-called Francis shaft turbine.
