  • The Winterstein castle ruins are a former moated castle with Gothic features. The first known mention of the castle comes from 1307, when it is said to have been built. The town of Winterstein, which surrounded the castle and still surrounds it today, dates back to 1247. The aristocratic family Wangenheim, which is one of the Thuringian nobility and originates from Wangeheim, near Gotha, acted as builders.

  • Winterstein is a district of Waltershausen at the foot of the Großer Inselberg (916 m) in Thuringia and is only a few kilometers away from the Rennsteig. The history of the place has been closely linked to the family history of the barons of Wangenheim since the middle of the 14th century. She resided in the castle in the village until the end of the 18th century.
The former castle district is now a lovingly maintained park from which the castle ruins still proudly rise.
