The city wall is a beautiful eye-catcher and a reminder of how it used to be

Nideggen Castle is located on the northern edge of the Eifel, to the right of the Rur on a steep mountain spur in the narrow Rur valley, with the town adjoining it to the east. Nideggen is one of the castle-valley settlements typical of the Eifel.

The hilltop castle was built between 1177 and 1191 under Count William II as the seat of the Counts of Jülich; the associated settlement was built around a central market square on the gently sloping ridge that follows in the early 14th century. It was elevated to town status in 1313 and fortified with a surrounding wall and four town gates. After the castle and town were destroyed in 1543 in the Guelderian War of Succession and the ducal residence was moved to Jülich under William V of Jülich-Kleve-Berg, Nideggen remained an office in the duchy with the seat of the ducal waiter, but its position and character sank to the status of an insignificant village settlement. Both the Palatinate War of Conquest under Louis XIV in 1689 and the War of the Spanish Succession at the beginning of the 18th century overwhelmed the town and its population, leaving devastation in their wake. The castle, abandoned as a facility in 1794 and sold for demolition, served the population as a quarry for decades until the first security and reconstruction work began in 1901, in recognition of its historical value. In 1926, Nideggen was officially granted town status again. Despite its location away from the direct strategic lines, Nideggen was destroyed again in the Second World War. While the town was rebuilt in the 1950s based on the destroyed structure, the castle remained as a ruin. The castle ruins and the town still convey the historical significance in their overall impression.

Nice to see how it was built and preserved.
