Nytstor,
also called Nixtor or Nisstor, a passage from the city through the old
fortifications around the castle. This gate is the oldest Nideggen city gate, built between 1177 and 1200, still standing today, it is still a purely Romanesque building. It is said to have only been given the name Nytstor later, after the Nideggen line of the Jülich ducal house died out in 1423 and the successors moved their residence to Kleve and
Düsseldorf. At that time, Nideggen was administered by the castle governor Nyt von Birgel, from whom the name of the gate goes back.
