The north-eastern old town of Vacha is dominated by Wendelstein Castle. Its origins lie in the 12th century, as can be seen from the Romanesque keep. Originally separated from the main town, it was probably around 1250 that Heinrich IV von Erthal, Abbot of Fulda, ordered the castle to be included in the expanded fortifications of Vacha.

As part of the town's 800th anniversary in 1986, an exhibition on regional history was opened in the castle. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was converted into a museum. One attraction is the keep, which was converted into an observation tower in 2009/2010.
