The market is characterized by its historical character, the backdrop of the Old Town Hall, its close remodeling and its function as a link to the pedestrian area. The local gastronomy contributes to the unmistakable flair of the market with its outdoor seating. Traditionally, a weekly market takes place on a part of the market from Monday to Saturday.

In addition, the market is a presentation space for events of international character as well as traditional and folklore events.

The Bonn market square (official address: Markt) is a place in Bonn. It was built in the 11th century as the center of a commercial settlement on a busy road through Bonn. Its shape is approximately triangular. In its center is the so-called Marktfontaine (also called Obelisk). At its head is the baroque old town hall where the mayors reside. On the marketplace, the daily Bonn market takes place.
The market square is home to a variety of historic buildings. Well-known buildings are in addition to the town hall, the historic restaurant "Em Höttche" from 1389, where Elector Gebhard Truchsess of Waldburg on February 2, 1583 his wedding celebrated with Agnes Countess von Mansfeld, which led to the outbreak of the "Cologne War".
Another building that no longer exists today was the "Zehrgarten" restaurant, in which Ludwig van Beethoven frequented. This is shown in his 1792 created studbook, in which several guests of the restaurant, including the innkeeper's daughter Babette Koch and her brother.
Well known was the distinguished hotel "Zum goldenen Stern", today "Sternhotel" (Markt 8), whose ballroom was also used for concerts. As part of a soiree by Clara Schumann, the world premiere of the fairy tale pictures op. 113 by Robert Schumann took place there on November 12, 1853, played by Wilhelm Joseph von Wasielewski (viola) and Clara Schumann (piano).
