It started as a fairy tale.
Once upon a time there were two researchers named Dr. Schoof (from Willingshausen - Schwalmstadt - Germany) and lic. Renaat Van de Zijpe (from Velzeke - Zottegem - Belgium). They looked up everything about the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm; who lived in the area of Schwalmstadt, Kassel and Marburg. They did most of their research in the land of Hessen, where the fairy tales were written down. There they discovered that their two regions had something in common: each a river with a similar name: "Der Schwalm" and "de Zwalm". The city of Schwalmstadt, like Zwalm, is also a merger of various villages, such as Treysa, Ziegenhain (and 11 other small villages).

This Schwalmstadt Bridge, inaugurated on August 9, 2014, is a symbol of the friendship between the municipality of Zwalm and its German sister municipality of Schwalmstadt, which has been maintained since 1973.

Schwalmstadt, the sister municipality of Zwalm, is located in the German state of Hessen and has approximately 18,000 inhabitants. As the name suggests, the town is named after the Schwalm, a tributary of the Eder.

The bridge inaugurated on the occasion of the 40-year (at the time of writing now 50-year) twinning between the two "Zwalm" municipalities was produced by metal company Buyck from Eeklo.
