This remarkable building was built in 1731. Its exceptional portal in the Rhenish Renaissance style bears the town's coat of arms. Inside the building, on the landing of the stairs, is the Roman altar, which was found near the church in 1891 when the castle was destroyed. The altar, dedicated to Jupiter, undoubtedly comes from a sacred place and is a witness to the Roman occupation. The hall displays the clockwork of the church tower clock, which was constructed by Jean Baptiste Schwilgué in 1845.

Lauterbourg (German Lauterburg) is a French commune with 2331 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in Alsace (European territorial entity of Alsace). The city is assigned to the prefecture of Bas-Rhin and is located in the Grand Est region. It is named after the river Lauter, on which the town lies.

Lauterbourg is the easternmost commune on the French mainland and is located in the Upper Rhine Plain directly on the border with Germany near Karlsruhe. The easternmost point of the French mainland is at the mouth of the Alte Lauter (a partially silted-up oxbow of the Lauter) into the Rhine.

During our hike, the town hall was flying flags because of the presidential election on April 10, 2022.
