In the former village church, the German aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal and Agnes Fischer, the daughter of a miner, were married in 1878. At that time, Lilienthal had been working on the development of a cutting machine at the Royal Coal Mine Zauckerode.
The church was named Lutherkirche when the city of Freital was founded in 1921.
In 1907, the church received two stained glass windows, commemorating the reformers Luther and Melanchthon, and in 1912, the monumental painting above the triumphal arch, depicting the crucifixion of Jesus.
