This old waterworks from the middle of the 18th century supplied the gargoyles of the eastern Schwetzingen palace gardens. Two undershot water wheels drove seven hydraulic pumps that pumped 6.3 m³/h of groundwater.
Today, electric pumps are used to pump water.
One of the water wheels is somewhat hidden near the tax office.

The upper waterworks (today the tax office) was built around 1774 to operate the water features in the eastern palace gardens. It was equipped with two water tanks on the upper floor and two undershot water wheels, which were driven by hydraulics that were considered a technical masterpiece well into the 19th century.
