History: In the 12th century a group of hermits lived on Mount Carmel, in the current state of Israel. They were inspired by the prophet Elijah who withdrew in silence in the desert and on Mount Horeb and there met God. You can read his story in the Bible 1 Kings 17-19. The hermits asked for and received a short precept in letter form from Patriarch Albert of Jerusalem (1149-1214). In 1235, the Carmelites are forced to leave Mount Carmel. Most move to parts of Europe.
