    The Faluintjes now largely consist of pasture, but in the past it was

    a swamp that stretched from the church of Moorsel to the rectory of

    Meldert.

    The spelling of this area changed quite a bit over time.

    This place was probably made fordable by the monks in the past by placing bundles of wood in the water. This ties in with the explanation of the term 'Falaën', a Walloon village in a swampy region. The

    old French word 'Falourdes', which means bundles of wood or branches, would

    explain the name.

    Or could the name Faluintjes be derived from the French 'falun-falunière',

    which means shell sand quarry of shell marl.

    This cultural-historical explanation refers directly to the exploitation

    of the rich limestone layers in this region by the Affligem Abbey during

    the Middle Ages.

      In general terms, the Faluintjes or the Faluintjesstreek is the geographical description of four former Belgian municipalities, namely Baardegem, Herdersem, Meldert and Moorsel, which now all form sub-municipalities of the Belgian city of Aalst.

        Our hiking experience in Meldert - Faluintjes;

        Along the faluins to the abbey of Affligem...

        On the Grote Plaetse, in the shadow of Saint Willi, we are well informed by information panels about the hop cultivation of the past in Klein Poperinge.

        We leave Meldertdorp near Ingrid via a narrow alley. Through the glowing landscape we end up in the Kravaal forest. Satisfied with autumn colors and scents, we set our noses in the direction of the 2nd work of mercy. Unfortunately, when they arrive at the abbey, the Benedictines don't seem to give up. The thirsty remain hungry.

        On the way back we adjust our beer knowledge to the educational 'Hopveld'.

        By the way, a good explanation about the hop cultivation of yesteryear.

        We continue with a dry throat, dreaming of the delicious barley drink, to finally quench our thirst in the Hof Den Tuitelaar in Meldert village. Another discovery richer of our Flemish holiday country.
