With almost 36 km from the source to the mouth, the Vejle Å is not one of Denmark's longest watercourses, but it is notable for running through one of the country's most characteristic tunnel valleys. The river rises at the southern end of Engelsholmsee. From Lake Engelsholm it runs 12 km in a south-southwest direction before it meets the tunnel valley at Tørskind. From here, Vejle Å runs along the foot of Vejle Ådal while following the last 20 km to Vejle, where it flows into Vejle Fjord.
