Residence 'Stable of Het Ros Beiaard'

Ros Carillon
The unsurpassed symbol of Dendermonde, the pride of every Dendermonde resident, is the Ros Beiaard.

This legendary horse, which only makes its rounds in the city of Dendermonde once every ten years, is surrounded by numerous traditions and is partly why it has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

From the ground to the highest part of the head, the Ros Beiaard measures 4.85 meters. If one adds the ornamental plume, it reaches a height of 5.80 meters.
The horse is 5.20 meters long from nose to tail. The width is exactly 2 meters.

The head of the Ros Beiaard is a real work of art carved from wood and probably dates from 1600. It is hollow and measures 130 cm by 50 cm.

The wooden frame contains three rooms and can accommodate twelve porters or pillagers. They are given a glorious task to perform: wearing the Ros Carillon. Originally ship unloaders, the shipwrights formed a powerful trade from the 14th century onwards. Their task later expanded to include responding to fires. The craft survived the Austrian and French reforms and only disappeared with the First World War. In keeping with the Ros Beiaard tradition, Dendermonde folklorically honors the painer's office.
