On January 3rd, 1814, Major von Boltenstern tried to recapture Cologne with his troops and 150 volunteers. But their attack failed and the major was killed. On the same day, Prussian guardsmen and men from Landsturm Siebengebirge attacked the French troops on the left bank of the Rhine from the island of Nonnenwerth. A local, Johann Josef Genger, was killed in the process. This Landsturm monument commemorates both of them.
