On January 3rd, 1814, Major von Boltenstern tried to recapture Cologne with his troops and 150 volunteers. But their attack failed and the major was killed. On the same day, Prussian guardsmen and men from Landsturm Siebengebirge attacked the French troops on the left bank of the Rhine from the island of Nonnenwerth. A local, Johann Josef Genger, was killed in the process. This Landsturm monument commemorates both of them.

The obelisk commemorates the fighters against Napoleon. The literal bedrock of the Siebengebirge. In 1843 the remains of the monument were removed without a murmur. After the failure of the revolution of 1848-49, the Prussian king approved of the initiative to rebuild the Landsturm monument. The monument was completed in 1857

This monument was erected in memory of the wars of liberation and with the bench next to it, this place with a beautiful view invites you to take a short stop on the way up to the castle ruins.
