"... In the Middle Ages, the most important stone was trachyte from the Drachenfels near Bonn. The cathedral workshop operated its own quarry here. Almost all of the rising walls and pillars were built from trachyte. Columnar basalt and tuff were used in the foundations, and tuff stone was used for the vaults. The cathedral workshop also operated its own quarry at Unkelstein near Oberwinter to extract the columnar basalt.
