Tips

  • Radio towers / Chappe telegraph

From here you can see modern radio towers (48m high transmission mast of the Telefonica Group in the immediate vicinity) and historical transmission masts (behind Ittersdorf, the over 270m high long-wave transmission masts Europe 1). To this day, the 59m high television antenna tower near the transmission building, which was planned for a TV station Telesaar, catches the eye. In this area, however, the first telegraph line ran on German soil more than 200 years ago. At the time of the French Revolution, Claude Chappe succeeded in creating a technically feasible optical telegraph device based on the transmission of characters with the help of pivoting signal arms. Two swiveling crossbars were attached to a high mast, with two further swiveling bars at each end, with which, depending on the position, different letters could be signaled by means of a “code”. The signal towers were within sight of each other. In 1813 the line between Metz and Mainz (225 km) was expanded. On the opposite, Scheidberg, such a telegraph was set up: It connected the stations on the Tromborner Höhe and on the Gauberg near Siersburg on the Metz - Mainz line. The time it took to transfer a single letter was an impressive two minutes at the time. Napoleon Bonaparte made use of the system, and it enabled him to communicate better between the various units than any other army of the time. However, the French telegraph line Metz - Mainz was destroyed by the Prussians in 1814. Further information and notes can be found at: gisingen.de/Tourismus/Wandern. Source: Text information board

  • Gisingen

The town of Gisingen is located in the southwest of Saarland at an altitude of approx. 330m and is bordered by the Scheidberg (387.5m) in the south and Gallenberg (376.9m) in the west. The special nature of the soil is characterized by shell limestone. The place was first mentioned in documents in 1140 under the name Guisinga. Since the regional reform in 1974, Gisingen has been one of 10 districts in the greater community of Wallerfangen and today has around 800 inhabitants, making it the third largest district. Gisingen is connected to the municipal capital of Wallerfangen by the L 110, 355 via the neighboring town of St. Barbara . Due to its topographical location, Gisingen is also called the “Gateway to the Gau”. In addition to a daycare center with two groups, Gisingen has the primary school “Auf dem Muschelkalk”, the only primary school for the Gau villages in the municipality of Wallerfangen. The place is served by several bus lines and is a transfer point for the surrounding Gau villages. The village infrastructure has gastronomic offerings (restaurants with beer gardens and pubs), a village shop with a café, an EC ATM, playgrounds, a boules pitch, a football pitch, a golf course, numerous clubs, fast internet and free Wi-Fi in many places . The Lorraine farmhouse museum “Haus Saargau” with a herb and scent garden and the Catholic church of Sankt Andreas Gisingen with a parish garden - located not far from the hiking trail - are worth a visit. • The Gallenberg is a mountain ridge, 373 m, west of Gisingen (Wallerfangen), eastern foothills of the Paris Basin* in the Saarlouis district.

From here you can see the gentle curves of the hills around Gisingen.

*) The Paris Basin is a fossil sedimentary basin in northeastern France, western Belgium and southeastern England. It began to sink in the Permian (300 to 250 million years ago). Over 3,000 meters of sediment accumulate in the Paris Basin.
The Paris Basin is bordered by the Ardennes and Vosges and extends into Saarland.
