The seven-story, 34-meter-high radar tower of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Office in Cuxhaven (WSA) from 1960 stands on 64 wooden piles on the Elbe fairway and is part of the land radar chain in the Elbe estuary area.

It was inaugurated by Federal Transport Minister Hans-Christoph Seebohm (CDU). Radar towers became commonplace alongside conventional shipping signs from the 1950s onwards. The ship reporting service was located on the top floor until 1996 (in Steubenhöft until 2008). In 1996 the tide direction indicator was decommissioned.

The webcam at the Cuxhaven radar tower went offline in 2019 (now at Steubenhöft).
