The late medieval castle, extended in the 18th century at the front by the impressive baroque porch, was - like the corresponding office Ritzebüttel- from 1394 to 1937, well over five hundred years, an exclave of the city of Hamburg. After extensive restoration, the castle was handed over to the public in 1996 as a "citizen's castle".

The brick castle from 1340 is surrounded by a beautiful castle garden. Between old trees and flowering bushes you can always discover modern sculptures. More of them in the Künstlerhaus next to the castle.
