Bike Touring Highlight
Most recently, the Bastei restaurant was run as "Our Pearl on the Rhine" within the Blatzheim-Gaststättenbetriebe GmbH by Hans Herbert Blatzheim's son from his first marriage, Jochen Blatzheim (* 1942). The stepbrother Romy Schneiders and "Cologne star restaurateur", however, will retire on 30 April 2017: "And there is no one in sight who wants to take over the bastion." (Ksta.de, 01.03.2017)Until 2001, the bastion belonged to the city of Cologne. The bastion was then diverted to the municipal Cologne trade fair and then transferred to its subsidiary Köln-Kongress GmbH.
The operating permit of the meanwhile structurally and technically obsolete restaurant is now based solely on grandfathering. Requirements of monument protection and building authorities "make structural changes until today priceless or impossible" (ksta.de, 07.09.2015 and 01.03.2017). This is one of the reasons why the bastion has only been available for closed societies since 1997 (ibid.), While civil marriage has been possible since 1 March 2009 (diebastei.de).
The future of the Bastei thus seems uncertain, even if Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker spoke out for the rescue of the building: "We should still manage to get this gem together." (Ksta.de, 01.03.2017)
