The Bolderberg nature reserve is one of the top spots in De Wijers. It is managed by the Limburgs Landschap nature association and, like the nearby village, is named after the witness hill with its iron sandstone.

This hill was once given the name Barreberg, which means bare, dry mountain. Not much of that bareness remained around 1990. There were plenty of Scots and Corsican pines planted for mining, exotics such as American oak and American bird cherry had also settled there. Because nothing was done, the afforestation increased even more. Here and there there were still remnants of heathland. In 1989, Limburgs Landschap vzw was given the opportunity to manage some of these plots and restore the heathland.
