When I did this walk there was no boardwalk yet, so I walked ankle-high through the mud through the Berkenbosbeemden. The brand new boardwalk will hopefully attract more walkers to this beautiful but relatively unknown walk in my home region...

The new boardwalk "Door 't Stuk" (opened in 2024) winds through the Berkenbosbeek nature reserve and ends at Stukkenstraat in Zolder.

The Berkenbosbeek nature reserve, 32 hectares in size and managed by Natuurpunt, owes its name to the stream that flows into the Mangelbeek. The area was created by sandstone extraction until 1940 and by subsidence of collapsed mine shafts from the coal mine in Zolder, which led to the formation of marshy areas.
