The Terlaemen estate owes its name to its location on the Laambeek stream, which meanders through the estate from west to east and supplies the many ponds. The estate covers 142 hectares.Fifty hectares are occupied by fish breeding ponds, known as the Terlamen or Terlaemen ponds. As elsewhere in Central Limburg, Kempen fens were excavated, originally to mine iron ore and iron sandstone. Later, they were used for fish farming. The estate's ponds are part of the Central Limburg Pond Area. There are 20 breeding ponds in total, breeding nine different fish species, as you can read at visitlimburg.be/nl/wat-te-doen/kasteel-terlaemen
