    Watch out, you are walking through a living museum - because ferns (botanical: Filicinophyta, Polypodiopsida) are among the oldest plant species on earth. They were already growing when dinosaurs still ruled the earth, i.e. in the carboniferous earth history about 350 million years ago.

                The Asbeek originates from spring water in the Asbroek, slightly east of the Zutendaal hamlet of Bessemer on the Kempens Plateau. The Asbeek is a defining feature of the Pietersembos in the Hoge Kempen National Park, as the stream irrigates the forest over a distance of approximately 5,500 metres. The source area consists of a number of springs, situated in a moist meadow area at an altitude of 70 to 80 metres above sea level.
