A very special moated castle is located in Dortmund's Bodelschwingh district. The special feature is expressed on the one hand in the special idyll and beauty of the building surrounded by a large pond. On the other hand, due to the inaccessibility of the complex with the large park, which is generally not accessible to the public due to the private ownership of the building. The rare moments when the zu Inn- and Knyphausen family opens the castle gates and invites you to events are all the more valuable. These include the adventure markets and the Open Monument Day, which takes place every year in late summer. The latter even offers guided tours through the interior of the castle.
The heart of the complex is the magnificent manor house, which is located in the middle of the water surface covered with water lilies and is only connected to the old outer bailey via the stone arch bridge. It still rests on the historic oak piles underground and consists of several nested building parts and towers with different spires, i.e. different spiers. The oldest parts, dating back to 1300, are on the northern side. Today's Renaissance building with the characteristic turrets was built in the middle of the 16th century. It survived the Second World War and the mining by the nearby Westhausen colliery without damage. The baroque landscape garden was created towards the end of the 19th century. The adjacent forest was also part of it, but was divided off by the construction of the nearby A45 motorway. The garden has mature trees, several ponds and fountains and extends around the water area with the manor house.More information here: ruhrgebiet-industriekultur.de/schloss-bodelschwingh

Even if the castle itself is not accessible to hikers, it is still worth taking a short walk through the castle park. Beautiful old trees and a swan pond, together with the main building, provide beautiful photo opportunities!
