De Burcht was once built for protection during wartime. Today, the fortress on the hill in the middle of the city is a great viewpoint. The small climb up is worthwhile in any case, the all-round view of Leiden is fantastic.

The Burcht van Leiden is a fortress on an artificial hill from probably the 11th century, which offers a wonderful view over the city, which was very helpful in defending the city in earlier centuries.
