The German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) toured with the Dutch military East Indies and Japan and brought from there many scientific and ethnological knowledge to Europe. In the botanical garden of the University of Leiden grow today still some of his brought plants and trees.

The HORTUS BOTANICUS was the first one established in the Netherlands and associated with the University.
The building on the left is the ACADEMY building (ACADEMIEGEBOUW) that still today hosts the club for the staff of the University.
