In 1853, when Sylt was part of the Danish Kingdom, King Frederick VII of Denmark commissioned the construction of a lighthouse on the island's highest point, the Red Cliff. The original name of this lighthouse was therefore Red Cliff. The name was changed to Kampen Lighthouse in 1975.
