Already planned by Wilhelm Benque, the construction of the fountain was repeatedly postponed due to a lack of money, although the construction of the playground also prepared the excavation pit for the fountain.

On the occasion of the "Northwest German Trade and Industry Exhibition", Senator Dr. Victor Marcus donated the necessary construction funds so that the fountain could be put into operation at the opening of the exhibition based on designs by Professor August Töpfer.

In 1942, the bronze ornaments were dismantled for war purposes. In 1959, the fountain was put back into operation in a simplified form. 16 years later, an upper basin and four mussel shells were added based on a design by the sculptor Claus Homfeld.

The Marcus fountain in the Bürgerpark in Bremen-Schwachhausen was erected in 1889 near the Park Hotel Bremen and is included in the list of fountains in the city of Bremen. It has been a listed building since 1984.

Victor Marcus (1849–1911) was a senator from 1887 and mayor of Bremen in 1907 and 1909. In 1883 he donated the first Marcus fountain in the Bürgerpark, which was built from 1866, and in 1908 the second Marcus fountain in the Liebfrauenkirchhof.

The fountain from 1889 to beautify the park was designed by August Töpfer. The figures are by the sculptor Diedrich Kropp and the metal decorations by F. Kallmeyer.

The round fountain shaft with cross-shaped projections and the large bronze fountain bowl on top of it stand in a round, stone frame. The figurative decoration and the upper bowl were dismantled in 1942 for the metal donation and put back into use in 1959. In 1976, the fountain was supplemented in a modified form and the upper bowl was renewed; instead of the seahorses, there are now mussel shells here. The new versions of the fountain were created by Klaus Homfeld.
